Instead of focusing on spooky Halloween activities, this scavenger hunt gives kids an opportunity to learn about the people who serve their church, hear stories from people who have been part of the church for years, and remember the faithful Christians who have gone before us.
There are three different scavenger hunt cards, so not every team will have the exact same questions.
What Is the Remember & Shine Scavenger Hunt?
This activity is designed for children ages 5–12 and works especially well when younger and older children are placed together on teams.
Each printable scavenger hunt card has 12 different questions. Kids work together as a team to find people at the church who match each description or can answer each question.
When they find someone who fits the question, that person signs inside the corresponding box.
The goal is simple:
Get every box signed before the other teams!
Once a team has all 12 boxes signed, they must run their completed scavenger hunt to the person in charge of the game. The first team to turn in a completed card wins!
How to Play
1. Divide the Kids Into Teams
The church can decide how many kids should be on each team based on the number of children participating.
I recommend mixing ages when possible so older kids can help younger children read the questions, talk to adults, and keep track of their team’s card.
Each team should receive one scavenger hunt card and something to write with.
2. Choose a Team Name
At the top of the scavenger hunt page, kids will write their team name.
This makes it easy for the person running the game to keep track of which team finishes first.
3. Start the Hunt!
Once the game begins, teams can spread out around the church and start looking for people who match the questions.
Some questions ask kids to find someone who has served in a particular way at church.
Examples include:
- Find someone who serves in the nursery.
- Find someone who has taught a Bible lesson at church.
- Find someone who is a church usher.
- Find someone who is a greeter.
- Find someone who works on the production team, such as media, sound, or lighting.
- Find someone who serves in the kitchen.
- Find someone who serves with the youth group.
- Find someone who helps clean the church.
- Find someone who has had their wedding in this church.
Other questions encourage kids to actually have a conversation with someone.
For example:
Ask someone:
“What is your favorite thing about our church?”
Or:
Ask someone:
“Who is someone you remember who loved serving others?”
These questions give kids an opportunity to hear stories and learn things they might not otherwise know about the people in their church.
4. Get the Box Signed
When kids find someone who matches the question, that person signs inside the box.
There is one important rule:
A person can only sign a team’s scavenger hunt once.
They cannot sign multiple boxes on the same team’s card.
This encourages kids to keep meeting new people instead of finding one person who can complete several questions.
5. Race to the Finish!
Once all 12 boxes have been signed, the team should take their completed card to the person running the game.
The first team to turn in a completely signed card wins!
Make sure the person in charge checks that all of the boxes have been completed before declaring a winner.
What Kids Will Discover
One of my favorite things about this activity is that it is more than just a race around the church.
Kids may discover that the person greeting them at the door also helped with VBS.
They may learn that someone who works behind the scenes has been serving at the church for years.
They may meet someone who taught Bible lessons when their parents were children.
They may hear the name of someone who has passed away and learn about the ways that person served and loved others.
That’s what makes this a meaningful All Saints’ Day activity.
We remember the faithful people who came before us, we are thankful for the people serving today, and we encourage the next generation to continue that legacy.
A Great Activity for Mixed-Age Groups
The Remember & Shine Scavenger Hunt works especially well when you have children of different ages participating.
Younger children can help search for people and ask questions, while older children can help read the cards, keep track of the team’s progress, and talk with adults.
It also gives kids a reason to interact with adults they may not normally talk to at church.
Instead of simply running around looking for objects, they’re learning about the people who make up their church community.
Perfect for a Hallelujah Harvest or Christian Halloween Party
This scavenger hunt would be a great activity for a Hallelujah Harvest, church fall festival, Christian Halloween party, All Saints’ Day celebration, or church family night.
You can set up the scavenger hunt as one of several activities throughout the party. Kids can complete it before or after other games, crafts, food, and activities.
The printable pages are decorated with cute fall leaves and pumpkins, giving them a festive autumn look without making the activity spooky.
