What’s Included in These 4th Grade Perimeter Worksheet?

This printable worksheet pack helps students strengthen one of the key geometry skills taught in fourth grade.

Students will practice:

  • Finding the perimeter of rectangles and squares
  • Calculating the perimeter of different polygons
  • Adding side lengths accurately
  • Strengthening measurement skills
  • Building problem-solving confidence
  • Applying geometry concepts in real-world situations

The worksheets are easy to print and are perfect for independent practice or guided instruction.

Why Learning Perimeter Is Important

Understanding perimeter is an essential math skill that helps students prepare for more advanced geometry concepts. By learning how to calculate the distance around a shape, students improve their measurement skills and develop stronger mathematical reasoning.

Regular practice also helps students become more confident when solving word problems and working with shapes in everyday situations.

Where Fourth Graders Get Stuck on Perimeter

Perimeter looks simple on paper and then goes wrong in predictable places. Knowing which mistake you are looking at makes it much faster to fix than reteaching the whole idea.

Confusing perimeter with area

This is the big one, and it usually shows up the week after area is taught. The fix that tends to stick is physical rather than verbal: have the child trace the outside edge of the shape with a finger while counting. Perimeter is the walk around the outside; area is the paint that fills it in.

Forgetting the hidden sides

On a rectangle with only two measurements labelled, a lot of students add just those two numbers. They are not being careless โ€” nobody told them the opposite sides match. Ask them to write the missing numbers on the unlabelled sides before adding anything, and the error mostly disappears.

Losing track while adding

L-shapes and other irregular figures have more sides than a child can hold in their head. Crossing off each side as it goes into the running total turns it from a memory task into a checklist. Slow, but correct beats fast and wrong at this stage.

Making It Concrete

Perimeter is one of the few fourth-grade topics with obvious real-world versions, and ten minutes of measuring usually does more than a second worksheet.

  • Measure the perimeter of a desk, a book, or a picture frame with a tape measure
  • Work out how much ribbon would go around a present
  • Walk the edge of a rug or a room and count paces, then measure it properly and compare
  • Ask how much fencing a garden bed would need โ€” the classic word problem, but with a real garden bed

The point of doing it in the room is that the units stop being abstract. A child who has measured a desk in centimetres understands why the answer is written in centimetres, which is a mark plenty of students lose on tests.

Final Thoughts

Practice is one of the best ways for students to build confidence in math. These free printable 4th grade perimeter worksheet provide an easy, effective way to reinforce geometry skills at home or in the classroom.
