How to Run a Spelling Week
Four weeks of worksheets works best spread across four weeks rather than handed over all at once. Spelling sticks through repeated short exposure, not through one long sitting, and a second grader will lose interest well before a packet is finished.
The method that works
Look, cover, write, check. The child reads the word, covers it, writes it from memory, then uncovers and compares letter by letter. The covering step is the part people skip, and it is the part that does the work — copying a word visible on the page builds handwriting, not spelling.
Writing beats saying it aloud for the same reason. Spelling is stored as a motor pattern as much as a visual one, which is why a child who can recite the letters correctly may still misspell the word in a sentence the next day.
Spacing it out
- Monday — read the list together and write each word once
- Tuesday and Wednesday — five minutes of look-cover-write-check
- Thursday — use the words in sentences rather than in isolation
- Friday — quick check on the whole list
Five focused minutes on four days beats twenty minutes on one. If a week gets away from you, repeating the same list the following week is far better than pushing ahead to the next one.
When a word will not stick
Most stubborn words are stubborn for a reason worth finding. If the word is because, the problem is usually the middle. If it is friend, it is the silent i. Ask the child to write the word and circle the part they were unsure about, then practise only that fragment.
